    Careers and Jobs Today

    By | May 18, 2008

People don’t stay in the same job for a long time anymore.  Work life options are changing as employment options are impacted by the economy and social factors. In fact, where it used to be that people stayed in one job for a life time, changing jobs every few years is now the norm. People are even changing whole careers do to changes in employment opportunitites.

With the current economy, leaving a job or changing one may not be a choice you make; it might be made for you.  Your employer may downsize and leave you in the dust, laid off and looking for a new job.  While sudden unemployment is never convenient, it’s even worse if you’re a baby boomer or older and find that your skills are not being sought in the workplace as much anymore.

You don’t have to give up hope. You can think about how to put the talents you’ve gathered over a life time of work into a transition mode.  Find ways to develop “transferable skills” using what you’ve learned all of your life.

You don’t have to just be a laid off worker to do this.  You could be a woman who stayed at home to raise her children and now find that it’s time to get back into the workplace. You have more skills that are transferable to the workplace than you might imagine.

Learning to bring out your talents for successful transition in the workplace is a skill that you can master.  You’ll find multiple concepts and ideas to help in this section of the NACWIB blog.
