The Business Lunch – Who’s In Charge?

    By | June 6, 2008

Doing business over a meal is a common workplace occurrence.  But are you ready to impress when you dine over business?  Here’s a tip to help you out.

The person who does the inviting is considered to be the host of the business meal.  That person is expected to make the plans for the meal ahead of time.

That means, if you invite a client to meet you for lunch, don’t call and ask that person where he or she would like to go? That can reflect poorly on you. You client might think, if you can’t decide where to go for a meal when you issue the invitation, how are you going to decide on a business matter?

Instead, when you make the invitation, also suggest a place to meet along with the time.  Be sure to call the restaurant ahead of time to reserve a table.  Ask about any dining or beverage specials and let them know the name of your client (or whomever you expect).

And by the way, arrive early. You never want to let your client beat you to the location and end up waiting on you. This is a business etiquette tip to help you make a best impression.
