One of the biggest threats to skin is dryness. This is more of a problem in the winter (when the air is dryer and colder) than at other times of the year. Because there is not much sun, we don’t think about our skin. But, by the time that you notice the signs of dryness, it has often been going on for some time.
Signs of Dryness
Most of us don’t think about our skin until it comes time to show it. In the winter, most of the skin is covered up (or at least it should be). But, this is when we need to be paying more attention to it so that when we reveal our covered areas, we show off a moisturized outer layer.
How do you know that your skin is getting dry? You may notice flaking skin. Skin cells naturally shed to make room for newly formed skin, but it is often not visible.
Redness and itchiness on your skin indicates inflammation. Dry, cracking skin can lead to soreness and irritable skin conditions.
Would it surprise you to know that this can occur indoors before you even head out in the cold? When the heat is turned on, the air gets drier. Your skin is already losing moisture. When you step outdoors in the wind and cold, that condition is exacerbated.

Here are some tips to help you to boost your skins suppleness.
* Talk to a dermatologist – They can assess your level of skin dryness and suggest ways to boost the moisture. If you have any particular skin conditions that predispose you to skin dryness, they can detect that also.
* Increase your moisture – You can do this in two ways. One, drink more water. When hydration is tackled from the inside and the outside, it works better. Even if you don’t feel thirsty, drinking at least eight to ten glasses a day increases your moisture levels. If you spend a lot of time outdoors you’ll need it.
Second, choose an ointment type of moisturizer that will seal and help you lose less from your skin. Putting it on at night will help it sink in as you sleep. For greater effect, wear socks and gloves to bed after applying your moisturizers.
* Use sunscreen – The sun can burn you even when it’s cold. Protecting your skin in all ways can reduce damage to it.
* Remove wet clothing – When you come inside, remove any wet clothing right away to avoid peeling and dryness. Then, dry the wet areas and moisturize.
